Three years ago Kuan joined us after working in high-end residential architecture in Australia and London.

Kuan was born in Taiwan and at the age of nine moved to New Zealand which is where her family, friends and home has remained. Furthermore, studying and working in Australia before moving to London has secured her as Retrouvius’ most international team member.

Kuan chose the ceramic cauldron as her favourite Retrouvius piece. It was used for melting glass at 3000ºC in an art school kiln. Over the years it became glazed with an incredible white surface from the melted glass which now sits, cracked in the bottom. “It’s not what you would expect from an item that was used in an industrial, high temperature process. I love its simple form and the beautiful remnants of glass.

A talented ceramicist and potter herself, she appreciates how the years of industrial use have layered to a beautiful piece of sculpture.
Kuan would set brass pins in the top of the cauldron to support a bevelled edge glass top, making it into a small table that would be placed in a room filled with greenery and plants.
