Guide to re-using salvaged panelling

Here we check in with our salvage team and design studio to lead you through common questions and inspire the reuse of panelling in your own project.

Firstly, Which timber are you working with?

Whether veneered boards, mixed timber or hardwood panels, or Neo classical designings bringing late C19th and early C20th flair, each have challenges and bonuses…

Do you want to chop them up?

This is not our usual preference but sometimes necessary, either to standardise to a common dimension or to insert a door etc.

The main question arising here is how to deal with a junction. Think about the detail or join. Beading or a shallow gap are options. In this wardrobe, our solution comprising salvaged burr maple panels combined with our salvaged iroko, uses the junction to form vertical hand pulls.

Will the panels be clad or the depths used in their own right?

Work to the dimensions of your room. A datum line will help identify a consistent level point. Working from the top of the room down will help lighten visually.

Panels offer a great interior solution as a full cover cladding, providing consistency and a greater depth and texture than painted walls. We love the visual language of timbers and mixed timbers.

Panels can be used in a variety of joinery solutions and easily integrated with other elements. Storage and cabinet doors and hidden doorways all benefit from the enriching qualities of salvaged panels.
