London Craft Week 2018

Friday 11th May, 2 - 3.30pm

Maria Speake of our Retrouvius Design team, Guy Hills of Dashing Tweeds and textile and surface designer Daniel Heath discuss sustainability, re-use and their approach to crafting with journalist Charlotte Abrahams.

Come to peek inside the jewel-box home of Dashing Tweeds owners Guy & Natasha Hills, where Daniel Heath, textile designer, first hung his early experimental work.

See re-use in practice. Retrouvius have re-imagined materials as diverse as museum cabinets, parquet, stained glass, cast iron balustrades, leather from the British Library to name a few.

A building where all three creatives have helped make a timely individual family home.

Free but booking required.

Please visit our Eventbrite page to confirm a place.

Our latest stock includes two festoon fire surrounds designed by Alfred Stevens and manufactured by Coalbrookdale in 1875.

The two pieces are a design classic with several museums boasting similar. The Victoria & Albert Museum and the Tate Galleries house many works by Stevens in their collections.

We are offering them in original condition, complete with manufacturer's stamps, having recently been removed from a London home.

Alfred Stevens (1817-1875) was one of the leading figures of the Classical and Renaissance Revival, alongside a remarkable set of peers; Julia Margaret Cameron, Frederick William Pomeroy, Bruce James Talbot, William Gibbs Rogers and Willian Harry Rogers.

An accomplished designer and artist he rejected contemporary dinstinctions and worked across many disciplines, including painting, sculpture and ceramics - moving successfully from the fine arts to industrial design. Between 1857 - 1860 he worked as a designer at the Coalbrookdale factory in Ironbridge, the leading manufacturer of iron goods of the time.

He left a body or work and legacy of extremely high quality.
Stevens was heavily influenced by his studies of Renaissance painting, working in Florence and Rome during the 1830s. His enthusiastic use of traditional iconographic language reveals an admiration for Michelangelo and the Renaissance artists. His work typifies the spirit of the age in which it was produced, when modern manufactured goods were given mythical and often false histories.

Elle Decoration UK - November bedroom inspiration

Thank you to Elle Decoration for including our design in their bedrooms sourcebook.

Featuring timber treatments from a project in Hampstead our design team worked on. Salvaged panga panga parquet used in a master bedroom suite covers the floor, is hand sanded and continues up the dividing bathroom wall to become the headboard offering warmth and texture. A pair of old glazed Victorian doors lead to the bathroom.

Betty Soldi - Inkspired!

We highly recommend our good friend Betty Soldi's book Inkspired — a book about the beauty of how handwriting makes you feel from Swirls with a pencil to letterforms with pens, and calligraphy. A celebration of all creativity.
