Home Spas & Relaxation

What’s more indulgent than an afternoon soak or steam?

These days, inviting a friend round for a cup of tea and a sauna is quite the pastime — socialising with seats in this steam room/shower made from and sea defence oak. The gorgeous aroma of cedar is released in this hot steamy and sensual steam room entirely clad in profile off-cuts of this fragrant timber. A sofa beside  the sauna offers instant lounging and space to acclimatise with greek textiles continue the Thermae theme.

The bathroom has a living room feel and was very much designed as a social space. Salvage oak steps give a bathhouse vibe to the boxed and sunken level bath, ideal for enjoying the view. When designing a home for multiple generations, its important to consider where people sit and how they sit.  In this instance small children can perch on a step or lay on a comfy rug, and these steps are what make the bathing accessible for the eldest in the family.

The steam room features our Derbyshire fossil limestone, a material that took time to establish its reuse potential, as is so often the case with salvaged materials, available in finite quantity and requiring a material lead design process.

Retrouvius currently has stock of aluminium backed travertine — available as 600mm square pieces

Reclaimed travertine floor tiles in stock

Other favoured design approaches to spa and relaxation spaces include niches for shower accessories an maximising the potential of unique salvage elements that have vitreous qualities. Making a decorative feature from marble elements salvaged from fireplace friezes workd very well in humid environments.

This fabulous antique piece is not vulnerable to humidity and splashes. The artwork becoming the reference point for the reflective and twinkly mosaic.

Adam salvaged a haul of original London Underground signage. We’ve used them in a number of spaces and this oversized enamelled panel is ideal in this teenage boys’ shower room.

Thinking ahead to more optimistic weather… making a splash for some wild swimming straight from the deck and comfort to retreat back into. And a shaded garden poolhouse.
