Design Inspiration: Childrens’ Bedrooms

Its possible to achieve a lot in a small space. Box beds are particular favourites when the plan is tight and frees up space for a desk and increases floor area for playing. We often include a shelf or niche within box beds for favourite toys and books.

Retreating into a self contained world – upstairs and playing with scale – internal windows allow for a degree of independence whilst maintaining connection. Salvaged single glazed windows are ideal and Retrouvius often has stock available for reuse.

Oi Mum! Keep Out! Reclaimed pine shuttering buffers the passage into this attic bedroom and serves discreet privacy alongside useful wardrobe storage.

There’s a magic to sharing with a sibling. Little niches and nooks create ones own space to write to a penpal. We love these C19th windows bordered with coloured glass sourced by Adam. Timber cladding can easily be painted over when theres need for a colour update as the children grow.

The joy of small details and the thrill of hiding and disappearing beyond a curtain. Tiny pockets were sewn into this set of bunk bed curtains for a stowing away a little charm or keepsake.

Using salvage. The imagination is fuelled when something is transformed — even sets of wooden rulers accompanying a haul of lab top timbers from a secondary school have reuse potential, their increments punctuating bedroom joinery.
