An update from our project in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The Retrouvius Design studio are doing the interiors of this rare Georgian building that looks out over the southernmost peninsular on the Isle of Harris.
The full feature is out now in the January 2021 issue of House & Garden with words by Christopher Stocks and photographs by Michael Sinclair.
RETURN TO FORM:
A generous 19th-century house in Hampstead has had a sense of harmony restored by Maria Speake of Retrouvius
As ever, big thanks to Liz Elliot, Hatta Byng, David Nicholls and all at House & Garden.
This project was finished and photographed well before COVID struck.
Our clients say that during the pandemic it has proven itself as a well designed abode to both live and work in offering space and calm.
What is so successful for this international family of five are the numerous dedicated areas for each to exist, exercise and be communal without being on top of each other. The home has a lower ground floor pool, a games room and each individual has their own distinctively designed zone and bathroom.
We explored internal windows and glazing - decorative leaded doors, panelled doors with etched glass, Crittall doors from London School of Economics.
Huge slabs of book matched marble from an old stonemason's yard, and chevron-patterned mirrors from the Unilever Headquarters at Blackfriars bring strong graphic elements.
We acknowledge that the building will evolve and factor in that people will change the interiors in future - we try to ensure it is as easy as possible to replace elements without undermining the underlying quality and fabric of the building itself.
