Large Family House
Parsons Green SW6
Completed March 2003
A substantial design project successfully
completed in close collaboration with Helm Architects and
the clients.
The site consisted of a Georgian house frontage,
a glorified mews garage (large enough to house four cars)
and sandwiched in between a flimsy seventies glazed courtyard.
The mews and courtyard were demolished leaving only the Georgian
property untouched. Contractors were on site for fifteen months
performing the transformation from muddy wet crater-like excavations
to first castings of reinforced concrete works to the final
installation of fabric wrapped doors.
We were involved in a number of ways:
1. as interior designers of the house
2. as suppliers of all finishes materials
3. as furniture & decorations designer
It was a great opportunity for us to be in
control of the re-use of a substantial quantity of our reclaimed
materials. Hopefully showing how old materials work well in
a modern context adding both a layer of history and a richness
to the project. All joinery items in the new-build have deliciously
thick teak worktops and shelves, the teak originally having
formed an exterior balcony to the now demolished Queen Charlottes
Hospital. The dining room and courtyard use large slabs of
a Norwegian slate, flecked with reflective bronze that had
once graced the walls of the Department of the Environment,
Westminster.
Co-ordinating the interior decorations allowed
us to work with old friends Timorous Beasties who created
new textile designs for each of the main areas; a Japanese
inspired tree for the living room sliding doors, flying parrots
and insects for the dining area and organic clambering roses
looking into the garden.
