A banker's house
Chelsea, London
Completed May 2000
In collaboration with architect Nick Helm
this Chelsea terraced house has been opened up to create dynamic
raw spaces from the compartmentalised rooms of the ground
and dark basement floors. The rear ground floor was cut back
creating double-height space in which an in-situ concrete
spiral staircase is now a sculptural form.
As the sunlight passes from east to west
across the new glazed rear wall specially commissioned delicate
layered and printed fabrics feminise and soften the masculine
spaces, diffusing the light in changing ways. We commissioned
fashion & textile designer Michèle Oberdieck to
create these drapes using satin silk devoré, organza
and linen.
We supplied antique and contemporary furniture,
artworks, and sculptural pieces to decorate the walls and
floors. These include a pair of foliate timber carvings and
a stone sculpture of a torso- all 18th century. Illuminating
the walls are several silk screens from the archive of wallpaper
manufacturers, Cole and Sons.
Our input also included sourcing reclaimed
materials for finishes, including teak for flooring and furniture.
