A Photographers Studio
Camden, London
Completed Spring 2000
A collaboration with architect Joanna Rippon.
A two storey mews in Camden is both home and studio to a young
fashion photographer. Our brief was to fulfil his dream of
inhabiting an urban beach hut.
His studio is on the ground floor whilst the first floor is
a multi-functional living & working space. By day stylists,
make-up artists & models need space to hang out &
prepare for their shoots, by night it is a mellow apartment
for dining & dancing.
A large remotely operated skylight was introduced
to the centre of the plan, below which a bed is suspended.
Our client can sleep with the roof open to the skies.
A floor of marble pebbles glazed with resin
helped with the beachy feel, giving a good massage underfoot.
Colours are pale with the exception of the intense mahogany
worktop that runs almost the length of the building. This
was made from reclaimed handrails from a St. Jamess
office block, lovingly jointed & oiled by our contractors!
The stylish "retro" furniture we
sourced too; a huge leather "croissant" sofa, Mies
van der Rohe Brno dining chairs and a Bruno Mattison lounge
chair.
