Petrified Pattern is an exhibition of elaborate
newly designed prints explored on reclaimed natural building
components creating a new concept: "solid wallpaper".
Retrouvius, an architectural salvage and design partnership,
collaborate with textile designers Timorous Beasties.
Petrified Pattern extends the Retrouvius
philosophy of re-using reclaimed materials. From the lobbies
and facades of 50s & 60s offices Retrouvius
have rescued stone cladding- creamy travertine, green marble
& hard granites- andprinted these austere materials with
large-scale floral & geometric designs transforming them
into "solid wallpaper". This is textile design torn
away from cushions and curtains, away from the soft &
comforting & applied to the raw, heavy and bold.
Away from the increasingly formal and corporate
environment of 100% Design [at Earls Court], Retrouvius
Kensal Green warehouse is a rawer forum for the exploration
of design and architectural ideas. Petrified Pattern is experimental
in process and product, not a sale of slick vacuum-packed
objects.
Timorous Beasties is a partnership of Paul
Simmons and Alistair McAuley. Described as "textile mavericks",
their work crosses many disciplines and styles. Their early
prints were decadently scaled and used traditional ideas of
repeat and draughtsmanship. Their work has been bought internationally,
both by private individuals and national collections and has
even helped enrich the drama of Philip Treacy hats.
This collaboration is part of a series of
commissions for designers to work with reclaimed materials.
Watch this space for more shows where hard-won materials are
prized, discarded and prized again.
